I love DFW's non-fiction. I particularly love the two pieces you covered. Even so, the first time I picked up Infinite Jest, I had to give up after about a hundred pages, because it was a really difficult read. I picked it back again after a few years, gave it another go, and loved the book overall even though the hard passages continued to be hard to get through. If you get through those, there are pockets of the book that shine and break through and have the same spike and electricity as the best of his non fiction. If you read it, also check out Aaron Swartz' post about it, which is excellent.

Regarding your trip/vacation: I have always enjoyed vacations. They make getting home such a wonderful experience.
