Eurostoxx options expiry works a bit like this too. The options themselves have a typical payoff structure, but the settlement price of the index is determined by averaging the index price over a 10 minutes settlement window, sampling every 15 seconds. Some weird price action over those ten minutes as you get MMs discretely winding out their hedges and others trying to manipulate the settle.

Hey Kris, cheers for the article. One thought of mine: I am not a huge fan of the break in formatting/flow as in the "average settlement price of WTI of the prompt future in the month of February" box. I'm not sure whether these boxes are meant to serve a particular purpose, but at least for me it just creates a worse text quality relative to the lovely font that most Moontower articles are in. Not telling you your business, just thought you might appreciate the input.
