The Prince of Darkness Ascends
Moontower Munchies #116
Friends,
In this letter, we celebrate legends when they go.
Yesterday, Ozzy, the Prince of Darkness, floated through the pearly gates to ascend his own throne as King and Prime Mover of metal.
I can’t fathom what it must have felt like to start high school listening to Yellow Submarine and graduate with this being performed live:
It was a rift in time.
The imagery, dark tunings, the spectacle and the sounds that embody my favorite music are a direct descendant of that being.
He went out like a legend — just 2 weeks after his final concert, the “Back to the Beginning” show at Villa Park in Birmingham. He shared the stage with the pantheon of rock stars who rallied not only to pay tribute but raise what would be a benefit concert record, $190mm, for hospitals and Parkinson’s research — the disease he has been battling for years.
(My father passed earlier this year, also at the age of 76, in the late-stages of Parkinsons).
I watched this a few times yesterday. I’m good today. No more tears.
You can hear Ozzy right before Zakk takes that solo: “I love you all”
He knew.
[Fun fact: Our eldest is actually named after Zakk Wylde. I saw him a few times with Black Label Society including an acoustic show at the Independant in SF when Yinh was pregnant and we loved the name and the spelling and the fact that ZW is an absolute unit in life and the guitar. Ozzy found insane talents to play with him in Zakk and Randy Rhoads after he left Sabbath…and he found both of those guys 20 and 22 years old respectively.]

This is the second episode in this ELI5 series I’ve done with Matt, this one also getting amazing feedback (I credit Matt for making this feel relaxed, he’s very easy to talk to).
As dangerous as it can be to wade into a comments section this was one of the best reactions we could have asked for:
By explaining 2 styles of bar bets we can learn about odds, skew, how to think about options as one of these categories of bets, and critically why the price of the 2 style of bets tells us so much about a company that you’d never discover from the stock price.
Plus why the dot-com bubble was not a bubble 😏
Webinar
Tomorrow, Thursday 7/24, at 1pm pacific I will host a zoom seminar for paid subs. I’m re-doing Part I from the QuantInsider webinars I did this past weekend but it will be free for paid subs to this letter.
Paid subs will get access to recording for both Part I and Part II (which was focused on VIX complex and dispersion)
Each session ran about 90-120 minutes including Q&A. At the end we can turn the recording off and hang out a bit. I’ll grab a diet Coke, you can choose your own vice.
I’ll share the zoom link for paid subs tomorrow.
Stay groovy
