Friends,
Today is a a roundup of Munchies I enjoyed. They are all videos suitable to watch with your nerdy kids.
Intro To Large Language Models
Multiple people have told me this is the best video to get acquainted with how LLMs work. It’s excellent.
Andrej Karpathy of OpenAI (previously director of AI and Autopilot Vision at Tesla) does an A+ job of explaining LLMs to laypeople. The first half of the video brilliantly demystifies how the models work while the second half gets into modifications depending on context. It also gets into fun discussions about deceptions like “jailbreaking” or “prompt injections”.
Flour Power
PBS’ blurb about this documentary:
Flour Power explores how milling made Minnesota. The story charts the growth of wheat farming, the harnessing of water power, the founders of the flour milling industry, and the expansion of the industry into global purveyors of industrialized food products.
What a major undersell. This hour-long tour of the wheat industry is full of 20th century business trivia and underscores timeless interactions between capital, labor, politics, new technology, and mass psychology. You can trace the birth of commercials and mass advertising to this story.
Hacking The Dribble
This 12-minute video covers the surprising history of dribbling in basketball, the concept of an “on-ball” attack, and the evolution of the give-and-go. You will recognize the technique here, but realize
a) you have not consciously taken note of why it’s so hard to defend
b) that it’s hard to pinpoint in your mind when it became so popular
If you insist on something to read, I give you the equivalent of a semantic earworm. You won’t be able to unhear this form of language after subjecting your eyeballs to this article by John Nerst (@everytstudies):
It ends with the following line:
I guess the take-home message here is “how about those cat couplings, eh?”. I for one can’t stop noticing them now that I’ve started, and I’m hereby passing that virus on to you.
